THE BRIEF
Create a strong landscape identity for a multi-residential development, including private courtyards, communal areas, firepit and barbecue spaces, spas and independent street entries.
The landscape needed to work closely with the architecture and make the most of limited deep-soil areas.
THE PLANNING TEST
The project already had an approved DA and had progressed into construction documentation, leaving limited flexibility to change the underlying site arrangement.
Parking, building footprint and existing approvals placed significant pressure on the remaining landscape area, while planning requirements still needed to be met for planting, canopy and deep soil.
THE MOVE
Available deep-soil areas were treated as valuable site infrastructure rather than residual planting zones.
Larger planting was strategically located to soften building mass and frame views, while planting on structure was used to create private courtyards and landscape amenity where natural ground was unavailable.
Rooftop and elevated planting were coordinated with the architecture to maintain solar access, outlook and privacy.
THE OUTCOME
A multi-residential landscape that works within an established approval framework while giving private and communal spaces a clear landscape character.

On projects with an existing approval, good design is often about knowing where change still creates value.
The landscape strategy concentrated intervention where it could improve amenity, privacy and visual quality without unnecessarily disrupting the approved architectural and construction framework.
